The Kennedy Cougars defeated the Oceanside Omnivores 3-0 to take their second Maverick Cup in as many years. The Cougars were led by MVP Mike Luxenberg who defeated Bob Callahan to secure the Title for the Cougars. Steve Siegel once again accepted the Maverick Cup on behalf of his team.
Oceanside had an outstanding year coming from way down in the standings early in the year to reach the finals, and there are high expectations for Mark Espiritu's Squad in 2012.
The Massapequa Monsters defeated Team ADL in the 3rd/4th place game two courts to one. A good time was had by all as all team courts were played at Eisenhower Park on a spectacular day to play tennis.
A fantastic summer season has come to a conclusion we are hoping to continue on the progress of the league that we have built on from last year. We look forward to an even more exciting 2012. I would like to send a special thanks to all the captains who tireless and thankless efforts really make the league what it is today.

Maverick Memorial Open concluded today with two new singles champions.
Edwin Lee took the 4.5 title. What a tournament Eddie had. First he really showed he meant business this year by taking out a tough opponent Matt Spindler. You could see right away that Eddie has improved and really wanted to do well in this years tournament. Next was a rematch with the Master as Eddie got revenge from last years three set loss. He played fantastic and earned a two set win over the Master. Then the match of the tournament which was played over two days, against Ian Katz. They split sets on Sunday only to come back for a deciding set. With Katz having two chances to serve it out the match went to a deciding 7 point tiebreaker. Eddie had fended off 9 match points in the match and took advantage of being in the tiebreaker and took the match.
In the Final Eddie took on a very game Mike Podsiadlo who had been playing a really tough match with Eric Jin before Eric had to withdraw with Body cramps. Mike gave his best effort as Eddie dominated the first set, but mike took the second setting up a dramatic third set for all the marble. Eddie returned to form and mike tired as Eddie claimed his first Maverick Memorial Open Championship.
In the 4.0 division new comer Thomas Gross earned a walkover first round and then took on Patrik Jutka the number 1 seed in the Semi's. He earned a great two set victory over Patrik and entered the championship match against another new comer Pio Kuo. This was another spectacular match as on such a hot day the first set was decided in a tiebreak. Thomas got the better of it and then used that to continue momentum in the second set and earn the championship.
It was a great holiday weekend. Great weather and another fantastic effort by all players. Congrats to everyone for making the holiday a great tennis weekend.

Last fall as the Kennedy Cougars defeated the Amityville Aces in the inaugural season of the Maverick Summer league, many players were eagerly anticipating season two. Over the months after the championship match, I contacted many captains and players alike to fine tune many of the rules, learning from our mistakes and writing the next chapter of the Maverick Summer Tennis League. It looks as though we will have 8 teams competing this summer. I am also in the process of contacting players in the Metro region to see if in the future we can come up with a division in Metro that will crown that regions champion and then ultimately play Long Island for the Maverick Cup. We really want to try to get organized early this season and truly give all our league players the very best experience for team tennis.
